Mom, the Thief
The girls came to get me because the car alarm was going off (the horn) and they couldn’t get it to turn off. So I go out to fix it, and see that our house is veritably surrounded by cops (keep in mind, this is a SMALL town)… two police cars, not counting the cops who lives across the street, four policemen, also not counting the neighbor. I asked if I could help them only to be told ‘Ma’am, this car has been reported stolen’ as he pointed to my suburban. Terribly confused, as it was STILL sitting in my garage, we hadn’t reported it stolen, and I am making regular payments on it, I asked in the most intelligent manner, ‘Do what?’
After half an hour of phone calls, OnStar consultation, license plate checks, requests for our name twice (including spelling of the last-which the cop said couldn’t have been made up) and a nice gander at the purchase agreement, it all became clear. The original dealership up by Chicago had done a vehicle trade with a dealership not far from us, the local dealership knew what we wanted and called them up to say they’d sell it for them, and we purchased it from the 3rd dealership since the production line. Today, the first dealership did an inventory check and lo and behold, this Yukon XL was missing! So, they report it stolen, thanks to some guy who forgot to remove the vehicle they traded from their inventory.
This after checks with the neighbors to verify there WAS a blue suburban in the area, and what house it was at, yada yada yada… My children were most interested (except for the one who was busy reading a Madeleine L’Engle book from the Time Quartet and oblivious to the excitement) and provided a united front to the ‘invaders’. I’m sure that we’ll be the talk of the neighborhood for awhile at least….
All of which I found amusing until I realized that this COULD’VE happened on a trip planned in the not too distant future, worse still, a trip to Chicago itself for a mother/daughter weekend… I can just imagine the Sonlighter friends reaction… Yeah we used to meet homeschooler’s from the forums until this one car thief came to visit and the cops showed up at our house…
